This finely-carved stone relief depicts Ganesha, the elephant-headed son of Shiva, dancing in a compact yet animated posture within a vertically-framed niche. His robust body is modeled with rounded volume, while his gently-curving trunk turns toward a sweet (modaka) held in one of his hands, a gesture that underscores his benevolent and accessible character. His remaining hands display traditional attributes, including a broken tusk, a rosary, and a ritual implement, articulating his dual identity as both worldly benefactor and spiritual guide. The lotus pedestal anchors the deity within a formal architectural framework, while the delicately-incised jewelry and garments contribute a restrained ornamental richness.
Flanking Ganesha on either side are diminutive attendant figures, most likely members of his retinue, who animate the composition through their varied postures and expressive gestures. These subsidiary figures, along with the scrolling vegetal motifs and miniature narrative elements, establish a carefully-balanced visual field that enhances the central presence of the deity without overwhelming it. The sculptor skillfully modulates relief depth, allowing Ganesha’s torso and head to project forward, while the attendants and decorative elements recede gently into the background. This controlled layering creates a sense of spatial coherence and visual clarity within the densely-packed format.
