Provenance:
European Private Collection, acquired in 1992
The bodhisattva is standing frontally with his right hand in vitarka mudra and the left hand displaying kataka mudra. His gently smiling face has a benign countenance, and he is wearing anklets, a long delicately-pleated sarong, sashes around his waist, beaded and jeweled necklaces, heavy foliate ear ornaments suspended from his elongated earlobes, and a diadem above his forehead with spherical jewel insets. His hair is arranged in a tiered, conical coiffure with a small seated image of Amitabha Buddha. A similar example was discovered in Tiriyaya (U. von Schroeder, Buddhist Sculptures of Sri Lanka, 1990, no. 64F).
